To Russell T Davies, my hero,
As I sit here, staring at my screen and keyboard, I wonder where to even start. There’s so much to say! Perhaps a quick journey back in time may help…
Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures — your TV shows played such a pivotal part of my teenage years. Providing a refuge from my troubled realities with an escape to a universe of time travel, Time Lords, and Daleks. Week after week, I lived for the adventure! And these shows are not just mere memories. I still rewatch today – again and again! They’re my comfort shows; making me laugh as much as I cry.
However your heroism extends far beyond that. For me, it’s your unwavering commitment to drive representation and acceptance for the entire LGBTQI+ community. From Queer as Folk to Doctor Who, Cucumber, Banana, and Tofu, to Years and Years and It’s a Sin, you fearlessly craft groundbreaking stories, create captivating characters, and ignite hearts and minds. Your work transforms public opinion and propels our community forward, empowering us to live boldly and unapologetically. And you never cease! You’re truly an unstoppable cultural force.
So this is my heartfelt thanks. From younger me, for offering an escape and indirect guidance through the labyrinth of my sexuality; making me feel ‘normal’ and not alone – and for inspiring me to build my own career in communications and storytelling. And here, at this very moment, more widely, for leveraging your power and platform to drive progress and acceptance for every member of our community, especially those who are transgender – ensuring their voices are not only heard, but shown in a positive, representative light.
Continue to change hearts and minds! Thank you.
