Government changes stance on Coronavirus

Last week, the number of confirmed UK cases of Coronavirus rose from 4 to 8. This increased number of cases has led the government to declare a ‘serious and imminent threat’ to public health, giving authorities additional powers to fight the spread of the disease, including enforced quarantine. Over 40,000 cases of the virus have now been reported globally, while the number of deaths in China now exceeds 900.

Ending HIV infections in London

The NHS has announced £1 million in new funding to end HIV infections in London. This 3-year commitment will be spread across 22 charities and 9 NHS Trusts, working together to deliver 12 projects. Funding will 1) allow for more testing, 2) ensure that people with HIV stay on treatment, and 3) offer support for more people with HIV to live well. The Mayor of London used the announcement to reconfirm his committed to ending the transmission of HIV by 2030 and tackling the stigma associated with it.

Oscars History

The South Korean film ‘Parasite’ has made Oscars history last night after winning the Best Picture category. Bong Joon-ho’s story about two families from opposite sides of the wealth divide has become the first non-English language film to win Best Picture in the 92 year history of the Academy Awards. ‘Parasite’ also took home the awards for Best Director, International Film and Original Screenplay.
